The Okra Project
The Okra Project
The Okra Project is a Black trans led collective dedicated to addressing the unique challenges that Black transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) individuals face. With a focus on combating food insecurity, housing instability, and barriers to mental health care, The Okra Project seeks to provide direct resources to this often underserved community. Our work centers around nourishing both the body and the spirit of Black TGNC people, providing free, meal and utility support, holistic wellness services, and programs that foster community support and safety.
At its core, The Okra Project is driven by the belief that everyone deserves to live with dignity, regardless of their gender identity or expression. By offering mental health therapy sessions, survival kits, and support services for those facing housing discrimination, we aim to remove systemic barriers that disproportionately affect Black TGNC individuals. These initiatives foster not only physical well-being but also mental and emotional resilience, helping to uplift a community that has been historically marginalized.
Support from our donors is crucial to sustaining this life-affirming work. The resources we provide, whether it's a meal or a session with a licensed therapist, are offered free of charge to our recipients, but they come at a significant cost. Donations allow us to meet the growing demand for these essential services, ensuring that Black TGNC individuals have the support they need to thrive. Every contribution helps us continue to serve as a lifeline for those who may have nowhere else to turn, affirming that Black TGNC lives matter and are worthy of care, respect, and investment. Your support is vital to making this mission a reality.
